In China, this mushroom is called ling zhi – which, roughly translated, means ‘mushroom of immortality’.
Reishi mushrooms have traditionally been used as a general tonic.
Maitake means ‘dancing mushroom’ in Japanese.
Legend says it is so named because any person who found the mushroom danced with joy, because it could be exchanged for its weight in silver!
The name Cordyceps in derived from both Latin and Greek, and literally means ‘Club head’.
Evidence for the use of Cordyceps mushrooms in traditional medicine can be found in Tibetan texts dating the fifteenth century – including claims about their properties as an aphrodisiac.
Chaga grows on Birch trees and other hosts, especially in the Eastern United States, Alaska, Europe and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
